DIM Concert on Thursday has been amazing! Many instruments and voices blew the crowd away. Backstage is a different story, however. The only thing blowing are tissues and germs from the mouth of coughing musicians. In not one, not two, but in a multitude of students — even two of our teachers. What’s spreading in through the music prime!
Musical Malady
At first, it was said to be allergies. London defensively shouts, “It’s just my allergies!” However, that only seems to be the case with a few students.
Headaches, fever, coughing, and stomachaches have been widely experienced. Alana expresses, “My stomach is horrendous, and I have a headache.” and Mya reveals that she’s been coughing. This seems like more than allergies! For some of our musicians, voices are at risk! One student claims “it’s my throat that bothers me a lot. Whenever I start singing, it starts hurting again.”
This week is a huge week for Musicians in the DIM and Vocal Prime. A series of performances and events are set for us such as the 80’s Concert and Carver Celebration. Coincidently, almost half of the primes have been touched with a malady. A music malady at that.
Malady or Melody?
“It’s Probably something else and spreading around,” Callie suggests, pushing Covid out the window. “A cold.” Mr. Thacker states confidently. It’s clear Covid is out of the picture here. What’s spreading is not the question, rather, where is originated is. It’s become more than clear that not everyone has caught this music melody when Ms. Adelung loudly expresses “I’m good!”, with a huge smile on her face, “but regular sickness has returned.” Why did some catch it and not others? “Our immune systems are adjusting still,” Callie further explains.
A Band New Day
Now let’s talk about the source of our malady. The source was clear when we all noticed a series of coughs flowing from Sydnee a few days before the concert. She stated that she’d been coughing and congestion for about two weeks. Since then, it began uprise, right? Nick admits “Earlier this week I was sick. I was experiencing a fever!” The source was clear, right? WRONG! One source explains that he’s been experiencing “A little cough, congestion, fever, sneezing, and muscle aches for 3 months.” 3 MONTHS!! Who even remembers what they were doing 3 months ago?

Is this experienced just in the Music Primes? What exactly does everyone have? Does everyone have something different? Will it die down? Will it get worse? Who knows? I will answer these questions in my next article! Until then, we heal in music.
